How genomic stability is monitored across generations of different cellular lineages, and why the rate and distribution of genomic mosaicism vary through our lifetime remain open questions.
The Acebrón lab recently revealed that several microenvironmental signals oversee genome maintenance in stem and cancer cells, with important implications to understand how mutations and chromosomal alterations arise during development, ageing and tumour progression. To address these questions, they combine single-cell and population OMICs, live imaging, biosensors, genome-editing and molecular analyses in 2D/3D ex vivo models of development, physiology, and disease, including organoids. Sergio P. Acebrón is also the founding director of the Basque Center for Environmental & Human Health (EHU-iBio), which mission is to unravel the molecular, physiological, and biological processes that impact health by studying the interactions between plants, animals, humans, and their shared environment.
