The Instituto Biofisika brings science to more than 250 schoolchildren in a new edition of BeZientzia
The students experimented with natural pH indicators and simulated the digestive process through hands-on activities designed by the Instituto Biofisika.
The Instituto Biofisika (CSIC, EHU) participated in a new edition of BeZientzia, the science fair organized by the five BERC centers in Bizkaia: Achucarro, BC3, BCAM, BCMaterials, and the Biofisika Institute.
The initiative brought together more than 250 elementary school students with the goal of bringing scientific research into the classroom through participatory workshops and hands-on experiences. Through experimentation, the students had the opportunity to discover how science is part of many everyday phenomena.
At the Instituto Biofisika’s booth, students participated in two activities designed to spark their scientific curiosity. In the first activity, they explored the world of acids and bases using a natural indicator made from red cabbage, observing how different substances change color depending on their acidity level.
The second activity allowed them to simulate the digestive process using a gummy as an experimental model. Through this experiment, they were able to observe how acidity and digestive enzymes influence the breakdown of food and gain a better understanding of some of the processes that take place in our bodies.
The activities were designed to encourage observation, hypothesis-building, and experiential learning—fundamental elements of the scientific method. Throughout the day, the students asked questions, shared their own explanations, and experienced firsthand how research helps us better understand the world around us.
Participation in BeZientzia is part of the Instituo Biofisika’s commitment to science outreach and promoting STEM careers among the younger generation. Initiatives like this help bring science closer to society and demonstrate that research is a key tool for understanding current and future challenges.
