Emakumeak Zientzian 2026: Students Visit the Instituto Biofisika

As part of the “Emakumeak Zientzian 2026” initiative, the Instituto Biofisika welcomed a group of around 20 students from Zalla BHI school today, offering them an engaging introduction to real-world laboratory science. Throughout the visit, the students explored several of the tools and instruments used by researchers in their daily work, gaining insight into how scientists search for antibodies that may prove effective against specific viruses.

To wrap up the session, the group participated in a hands-on experiment focused on extracting DNA from fruit. After mashing a small piece of fruit, they mixed it with a salt solution and a soap solution, two components that help break open cells and release their genetic material. Within moments, the DNA became visible, appearing as thin white strands floating inside the tube.

It was an exciting highlight for the students, who had the rare opportunity to observe something that normally remains hidden inside every living cell.
